I would urge you to spend 5 minutes to read this page: 'Spyware, from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia' to gain a better understanding of this problem. From my perspective, issues to do with spyware, etc, are more prevalent now than those caused by viruses.

Tools: ALL are free for home and personal use at least; some are free for all uses. Some give added functionality such as automatic scanning & updating in a paid version.
